Article 16

1. Men and women of full age, without any limitation due to race, nationality or religion, have the right to marry and to found a family. They are entitled to equal rights as to marriage, during marriage and at its dissolution.
2. Marriage shall be entered into only with the free and full consent of the intending spouses.
3. The family is the natural and fundamental group unit of society and is entitled to protection by society and the State.

以上是聯合國於1948年12月10日所訂定的家庭宣言，當中強調家庭是社會的自然及基本單元，所以社會以至國家都有保護家庭的責任。另外，這宣言又指出男和女在成年後，不分種族、國籍或信仰都有權彼此給合並建立家庭；當然，男女雙方之結合是基於雙方的自由和完全同意下方為合宜。
